A very popular method of detecting the rotor position is the monitoring of
the EMF.
If the motor is fed with 
voltage blocks, there are 
intervals when each phase leads no current.
During this interval the EMF in the related phase crosses zero.
This zero crossing can be detect to determine the rotor position
